The Santa Ana Community Vigils: A Community Fights Back

This following story was one of the things that motivated me into getting involved with The Santa Ana Community Vigils as I felt that a lot of our youth and young men were like these babies floating down the rivers of drugs, gangs, prisons and violence. All of them dying before their time.

When I could imagine them as babies or as children of God, then I didn't worry if they were cholos or drug addicts or ex-felons.

The History or Story Behind My Site

A Good Works ParableThere was once a village next to a river. The villagers were good people and the life in the village was good. One day one of the inhabitants spotted a baby that floated down the river.  Right away, the man dove into the river to rescue it. The following day the same villager walked next to the river, and, suddenly, spotted two babies that floated in the water.  He requested aid and both babies were rescued from the fast moving waters of the river.  And, the following day four babies were seen trapped in the currents of rivers. They were also rescued.  Then eight babies, then more, and still more babies. The villagers organized themselves quickly; erecting watchtowers and forming teams of swimmers to rescue the babies.  Soon, the life-guard teams worked twenty-four hours a day.  And every day the number of babies increased. The villagers organized themselves with efficiency.  Soon the life-guard teams rescued too many babies each day.  Groups of people were trained in rescuing mouth to mouth.  Other groups of villagers prepared food and warm clothes for the rescued creatures of the cold waters.  Many women, especially the elderly made clothes and blankets for the babies.  Other ladies worked in placing the babies with families so that each baby had a family and house. Although it was not possible to save to all the babies since there were so many of them, the villagers felt good with saving as many babies as they could save every day.  Truly, the priest of the village blessed them for their good works.  And thus passed the life in the village. But one day, one of the inhabitants asked, “Where do so many babies come from?  Who throws them to the river?  Why?  Let us organize a team of people to go up the river and to find out who is throwing them into the river.”  But the elderly of the village said, “But if we go up the river to find out, who is going to take our places rescuing the babies?  We need all the villagers working here in the rescue effort.” “But don’t you see,” said a single voice, “If we find the person who is throwing the babies into the river, we can stop him, and then so many babies will not drown.  When going up the river we can eliminate the cause of the problem. “It is too dangerous.” Then the number of babies in the river continued increasing every day.  The number of rescuers also increased, but the number of babies drowning was increased still more.
